What Is a Good NPS Score? (By Industry, 2026)
Short answer: anything above 0 is good, 30+ is great, and 70+ is world-class โ but โgoodโ depends on your industry and your own trend. Below: real 2025 medians for 12 industries, what a negative score means, and a paste-scores calculator right on this page.
The NPS scale: what each range means
Net Promoter Score is one number: the percentage of promoters (customers who score you 9โ10) minus the percentage of detractors (0โ6). Passives (7โ8) count toward your response total but not the score itself, which is why NPS can swing between โ100 and +100.
| NPS range | What it means |
|---|---|
| Below 0 | More detractors than promoters โ fix fundamentals before spending on growth. |
| 0 to 30 | Good: more happy than unhappy customers, with room to improve. |
| Above 30 | Great: far more happy than unhappy customers; most published guides call this excellent territory. |
| Above 70 | Customers love you โ scores this high generate positive word of mouth on their own. |
Guides disagree on exactly where โgreatโ starts โ some place the bar at 50, some at 30. The honest reading: 30+ is great against most industries, and 50+ is excellent almost everywhere (the calculator below uses the stricter 50 bar). What no serious guide disputes: below zero needs attention, and higher than last quarter is the only benchmark you fully control.
Average NPS by industry (2025 medians)
Below-30 software companies are not failing โ 30 is the software median. Find your row:
| Industry | Median NPS |
|---|---|
| Manufacturing | 65 |
| Healthcare | 61 |
| Agency & Consulting | 59 |
| Retail & Ecommerce | 55 |
| Professional Services | 50 |
| Fintech | 46 |
| All industries (median) | 42 โ the all-industry benchmark |
| Education | 42 |
| Media | 40 |
| Wholesale | 36 |
| Digital Marketplaces | 35 |
| Software | 30 |
The spread is the point: manufacturing sellers sit 35 points above software. On the consumer/business split, B2C companies median 49 while B2B companies median 38.

Context beats absolutes
A real example of why sector context matters: in 2012, Verizon Wireless scored 19 โ a number that looks unimpressive on paper, yet sat below its sector average (telecom averages were in the 30s and 40s) in a year when customers had real grievances. The score was honest, and the trend line mattered more than the absolute number.
Scores also drift: published cross-industry averages have slid over the years across most sectors, which is why โthe only good NPS is the one that is higher than it was last timeโ has become the standard advice. A 25 that was 10 last quarter is a good score. A 45 that was 60 is a fire.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good NPS score?
A Net Promoter Score above 0 means you have more promoters than detractors, and 0โ30 is a good range to be in. Above 30, most guides agree your company is doing great; above 70, customers love you and referrals are compounding. Because scores drift down over time across industries, the most useful benchmark is your own trend โ a good NPS is one that is higher than it was last quarter.
What is a good NPS score by industry?
Compare yourself to your sector. In 2025 survey data, median scores ran from 65 in manufacturing and 61 in healthcare down to 35 for digital marketplaces and 30 in software, with 42 as the all-industry median. If your score is at or above your industry row, you are doing fine โ a 35 is excellent in software and merely okay in retail & ecommerce (median 55).
What does a negative NPS mean?
That more of your customers are detractors (scoring 0โ6) than promoters (9โ10) โ most respondents would not recommend you. It is a signal to fix fundamentals before you spend on acquisition: every point below zero represents unanswered complaints. It is not unusual in lower-scoring sectors, but with the all-industry median at 42, negative territory is far below average in every sector.
Is 50 a good NPS score?
Yes. Fifty is above the 42 all-industry median and comfortably above the 30 "great" bar most guides use โ and higher than the median in 10 of the 12 industries tracked. That is why the calculator on this page labels anything from 50 up "Excellent." Check your own industry row above to see how far ahead of your sector that puts you.
